Think Lab Activity 2: Scale And Context

Updated: Nov 28, 2020

In order to think outside the box, we have to start with a box. I think this quote sums up the entire activity perfectly. Our activity was divided into 2 segments: Warm Up Activity and Main Activity.

WARM UP ACTIVITY

For the warm up activity we were divided into groups of 5 and each group was given an object to draw from different angles. My group consisted of Nandini Sharma, Harshul Grover, Namrata Gogoi, Siddhant Garg and myself. The object allotted to us was a tape dispenser. We all quickly had a chat with each and got into drawing the object.

We has 20 minutes to make 10 drawings each per group member. While we were drawing our respective sketches my peers and i had a very healthy and active discussion with each other and everybody was willing to help each other out.

MAIN ACTIVITY

Moving forward to the main activity, we now had to manipulate our perception of the given form, by rescaling, to create a new meaning. Each group had to present 10 outcomes ( 2 each person).

My peers and i started brainstorming through each of our ideas and started deciding who is responsible for making what. Throughout the time allotted to us we kept giving each other constructive criticism and shared our opinions about each others work. Our tutor also joined in and heard each of our ideas and told us where there is scope for improvement. After the submission we had to present our piece to the faculty and fellow peers.

The first drawing that i made was a tissue paper dispenser. The moment we were given the brief about our main activity this idea popped into my head. I instantly imagined it like the tissue paper dispenser's we see in the mall's. I used the top view of the tape dispenser to bring my thoughts into paper.

The second sketch that i made was a boat, rather a jet ski. I drew it without the tape so that there is a division where people can sit. The blade of the dispenser is the place from where water comes out. I added a little man to show the seating area even though he is standing and enjoying the view.

OUTCOME

Group struggles:

  1. Due to the online medium, there were certain ideas which were hard to explain to other group member even though there was active communication.

Group Achievements:

  1. We were able to finish our tasks within the allotted time.

  2. We as a group were very well managed.

  3. Constructive criticism was well received and nobody hesitated to share their opinion.

LEARNING MANTRA

We strive for complexities, but we find beauty in simple things.

Reflection:

I enjoyed every ounce of this activity. Learning from my past mistake where i lost track of time, in this activity i'm very proud that i could keep up with the time constrains as well as finish all the given tasks. I really enjoyed what each team member got to the table and how everybody's ideas were so different even though we had the same object. Not only did we work as a team I personally, got to know my peers, who they are and what they are like as a person. There wasn't any unnecessary rush hence there was ample time to actually enjoy the task while i was at it. There was a point where i completely disassociated with my surrounding because of how involved i was with the task at hand. We all are mechanized in such a way that we strive complexities, and when we are given something very simple we shrug it off. The hard reality lies in acknowledging the fact that working with simple objects is way harder than complex ones. We are so comfortable working with complexities that we don't even try to explore simplicity, after all great ideas never come from comfort zones.
