PERSONAL REFLECTION

An artist draws inspiration from the smallest of thing as his/her surrounding to a much more structural or larger subject. He/she doesn't need any fixed source to get inspiration rather s/he will find inspiration in everything. Further, an artist chooses his or her material and medium which s/he is comfortable with or have been using for a while. Sometimes artists also make their own materials and tools to create their art and want to create the whole piece from scratch. We create to express ourselves and put our thoughts and feelings out in the world. Along with this sometimes art is created to capture the beauty of something or someone. It is a great way for someone to put visuals to their journey for the world to see. An artist is anybody who can create with whatever s/he has which expresses their work to its fullest potential.

PHASE 2

I chose the colosseum because the arches and the unique structure of the building intrigues me therefore driving me to know more about it

The Colosseum, Amphitheatre. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian (69–79 AD) in 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus (79–81). Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96).

Step 2: RE-CREATION

Step 3: INTERPRET

The circles were made to capture the roundness of the structure and the line going through the middle is the broken area.

The basic form of the structure was captures through newspaper rollings.

Corrugated sheet gave a very realistic outcome

Step 4: ABSTRACTION

FAILED ATTEMPT

Red paint is used to capture the essence of the broken area of the structure, blue paint is used for the arches and yellow for the roundness of the structure.

Dots are used to capture the essence of the structure

Step 6: CONCLUSION

My chosen piece was the Colosseum Building which was built in the 60-70s AD in Rome. The visual language of the monument is extremely well thought out. From the arches to the curves everything complements each other to enhance the beauty of the structure. The Arches are put in a symmetric manner all around the monument making horizontal as well as parallel lines. This further gives the building a sense of movement. The break in the middle complements the structure, it plays with negative spacing giving it a complete look without being complete. Moreover, it forces the viewer to view the monument in a certain direction. The pillars and small crevasses give a sense of harmony to the architecture. Furthermore, the color of the building brings everything together and complements the details of the architecture while giving a soothing feeling to the eye. The time period between 500BC to 500AD was the era just before renaissance therefore a lot of revolutionary artworks started coming during this time. Evidence of these can be seen in various places. From my study of Italy, I couldn’t stop but notice how the pantheon (Roman Architecture) was appointed top which resembles a lot with Chinese architecture (Mukden Palace, 1625). It is already well known that a lot of Greek artforms come to Italy and other places conquered by the romans. The color scheme during this era was also more or less similar revolving silver, gold, sepia and red. A lot of social norms were also similar across globe and various social strata also formed which followed similar norms. Along with that, Christianity also grew popular during this era specially in Europe eventually spreading to other places. Alongside all of this there were certain differences as well, the roman sculptures focused more on realism and accuracy whereas the Asian sculptures were more visual capturing the essence. Both parties had the common motive of capturing the present but in different ways. Coincidentally or not, the toga worn by the romans somewhere also has a similar mechanism to that of a saree. Another popular technique of art was embellishing which was practiced on coins all around.

REFLECTIVE NOTE: Visual and Material Culture

The Era 500BC to 500AD had a rich visual and material culture. A shared belief amongst many empires during this time was worshiping the supreme being along with, immaculate appreciation for human body as well as people in the position of power. Christianity grew popularity in Europe, even though the Romans followed a Polytheistic belief system. Early humans also worshiped nature as seen in Etruscan civilizations in Italy along with various other civilizations around the globe. All throughout the globe battles were common which led to creating various social hierarchy and the need for power. The clothing also attributed to the same; the ones on the higher end of the social hierarchy wore more flourishing clothing and jewel as compared to the latter half which gave birth the various social practices as well as slavery, along with other factors. Widely used material during this time was marble(for buildings and sculptures), Bricks and Stones (for buildings),Concrete (for buildings)and Bronze (Sculptures). If we focus on Italy particularly, we can notice how the roman empire was an agrarian slave run society which might also be the case with other places. Romans unlike Etruscan followed a patriarchal from of society with set gender roles. Evidence of all these have been found in wall painting or murals, sculptures ,and architectural structures.
