Phase 1 || Journey Of An Object

Assignment: Pre - Work

Object || Screwdriver

Task 1: What is the reason behind choosing this object? What excited you about it?

The reason behind choosing this object is the visual appeal it has, which makes it a very intriguing object. This, in turn, is a drive for me to learn more about the tool beyond just visual characteristics and excites me to do so during this project.

Task 2: A simple description/definition of this object. Try to define in your own words. You can talk about its form, material, purpose, function, touch, feel, smell and sound. You can write in bullet points as well to support your text.

A screwdriver is a manual tool use to tighten or loosen a screw and has a solid form. It usually has a metal body and plastic handle and generally has a smooth texture. It ranges from heavy weight to light weight and has varying sized as well. A specific set of screwdriver is used by electricians to check the power flow which is known as a tester.

Task 3: Collect and bring as many varieties of samples of the selected object.

Task 1 || Slice And Dice || Identifying Available Variables

Part 1: Observe Your Object Carefully And List Down The Key Feature Under The Various Attributes.

Part 2: Identifying Available Variety

Reflective Writing 1

Design as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Discuss using concrete examples / anecdotes from your study.

Design has not only affected our past but has framed the present we live in. When we think of a screwdriver, for example, we cannot ignore the importance of screw with respect to it, as they are complementary goods. Therefore, to understand the origin of the object we also need to understand screws. Surprisingly the first screw was not even made for the purpose it used for today. It was used by Archimedes to transfer water from a low-lying body of water into irrigation ditches. Water was pumped by turning a screw-shaped surface inside a pipe. The origin and evolution of an object is driven by the need of a society. Screwdrivers only came into existence when the mechanism of screws were used for joining 2 things together. Somebody felt the ‘need’ to make the process of screwing and

unscrewing easier therefore came up with the idea of a screwdriver. As society evolved so did the needs and wants of the masses hence affecting the design of an object. Furthermore, efficiency while using an object increases the market for the object as well as reduces the time consumption, the current form of a screwdriver which is is automatic to an extent serves this purpose. The earlier screwdriver had a pear-shaped handle to just give it a place to hold whereas nowadays it has grooves for grip as well as use of various material like rubber to improve usability. To understand evolution, we need to find the origin, for we are not makers of history, we are made by history.

Reflective Writing 2

As part of this study, what insights did you gather about the social / cultural / political /scientific / technological situation or outlook, at different time & place in the history of the world? World? What did the history / evolution of your selected object, tell you about the history / evolution of humanity?

1. Technology and knowledge have helped in increasing the efficiency of the object. Earlier screwdrivers had no handles at all, then came the pear-shaped handle and eventually came handles with grooves and then with the change of material from plastic to rubber it gives a better grip with lesser human force.

2.Trade increased the production of screws therefore increasing the production of screwdrivers. Earlier these products were not known by the masses but due to industrial revolution a vast population got to know about it therefore started using it and researching on it.

3. Changeable tips for screwdrivers were invented to increase the usability of one single screwdriver. This way it is more cost efficient and less space consuming.

4. Automatic drill screwdrivers are used now to nullify human labor all together. Earlier screws were used on smaller objects whereas now screws are used in various places like automobiles and furniture which requires more force. Manually screwing and unscrewing would be laborious and time consuming.

5. Jeweler's screwdriver is used nowadays as small screws are used in jewelry and watches which was not done earlier. The market for screws has diversified and so has for screwdrivers.
