Phase 2 || Journey Of An Object

Updated: Mar 27, 2021

Assignment: Draw Your Object

Task 4 || Form Observation Through Drawing

INSIGHTS BASED ON YOUR OBSERVATIONAL INQUIRY

  • Stay mindful of proportions, not only in terms of the absolute scale (the three dimensions) of the object but also in terms of how one part / detail is in proportion to another part and the whole.

  • Observe each curve, edge, and the visible details of each part (screw, crevices, switches, buttons, handles, grips, angles, joints, any manufacturing detail, etc.). If you feel the need, draw details separately.

  • You may use color to enhance different parts of the object.

  • Explore and analyze the suitability of selected materials, shape, curves, edges, dimensions, proportions, and more. Try peeping in the manufacturing process, to explore its relationship with the form / material. Eg. if there is a line which seems non-functional, find the reason for it to be there, why the product if of this size, why it has these type, shape and size of any detail (screw, crevices, switches, buttons, handle, etc.).

Ergonomic Study Through Making

#1 Clay

# Corrugated Sheet

# Aluminum Wire

Reflect and discuss the challenges you faced in acquiring the right form, proportions, curves, edges, texture, and while adding details. Eg. why the designer used that particular curve, or angle of the curve. What will the slightest change do to it?

While attempting to recreate the form I struggled with a few things. While using clay I tried to make a hollow form to show that the shank goes inside the handle ho0wever the clay wasn't holding its form. I personally liked using corrugated sheet as it gave the perfect texture and form however it was hard to make the shank out of it. Corrugated sheet gave me the close to realistic outcome of the screwdriver. While working with wire I initially wrapped it around the screwdriver handle but soon realized that it wouldn't come off. So I had to loosen it and get the form free hand to get the curves and crevice's. These challenges forced me to think about why the material used for the screwdriver was such. The material used to make the screwdriver makes it handy and light weight therefore easy to use. The creases and cuts helps with the grip of the screwdriver which I gained a better understanding of while using corrugated sheet to make the form.

Functional and Emotional Needs

Functioning of a product is the major factor that influences its form. When a product is made the goal of the designer is to make it easy to use as well as effective. An object like a screwdriver’s major functioning would be a tip to fit in the screw and something to hold and rotate it from. This was the original need of the product. Over time the function however remained the same, but the need of the user changed. From a simple handle, now came the need of a handle with better grip to increase the functioning, then came the need for various tips and eventually, comfort while using the product with maximum functionality and minimum labor, which gave us the automatic drill screwdrivers. However, these were not cost efficient and could not be afforded by everybody therefore various versions of this mechanism came to use with exchangeable tip and shank, to magnetic tips, even varying sized of the shank depending on the use. A completely different use for the screwdriver would be a jeweler’s screwdriver which is used on smaller screw; here the functioning is the same, but the screw is comparatively smaller therefore the form must be manipulated to have a narrow tip and large body. The most recent kind of screwdriver is chargeable, battery operated screwdriver which is automatic and does not require an electrical output. The function of the object stays constant, but the emotional need of its user keeps varying to fit their comfort.

Factors that Inform The Aesthetics Of An Object

1. Market Need/ Trends around the product

2. Target Audience/ Age Group which is using the product

3. Form of an object which is visually appealing as well as functional

4. Texture of the product

5. Use of material in the product and how that compliments it functionality as well as aesthetics. 6. Cultural aspect surrounding the object

7. Colors which make the object appealing.

8. Functionality and Characteristics of the object

9. Usability of an object

10. Socio-Cultural aspects around the object

11.Attributes and characteristics of the object
