Think Lab Activity 6: New Possibilities

Updated: Nov 28, 2020

When focused on possibilities there shall be more opportunities. Resuming back to our think lab activity after a long break we had yet another adventure awaiting us. This think lab activity was a bit different that what we have encountered so far, there was neither a warm up activity nor an introduction. After a well laid out brief we had to immediately work on the main activity.

Main Activity

We were given a fantasy situation; if humans laid eggs, and we were divided into groups of 5: Nandini Sharma, Prachi Pahuja, Khushi Gurdatta, Aarushi Kapoor and myself.

After being divided into groups we immediately made the planner we were going to follow and divided the time accordingly.

We proceeded by brainstorming about the topic. One of my group members had a very unique idea where she focused on the unconventional use of egg being a flavored food item instead of a way of giving birth. As fascinating as the idea was we all felt that it was meant for some other activity.

Our idea was inspired by fish eggs where the egg had a jelly like transparent look. We came to a consensus where the human baby will also have a similar look, and grow in the same way outside the womb.

To achieve the baby I initially started with aluminum foil. After review my tutor suggested to alter the material used to make the baby, so I proceeded with wheat flour. After the baby was made out of wheat flour I wrapped it with clear food wrapping sheet to get the 3D model.

I also made another digital attempt to make a logo for the app poster one of my peers made.

The following are the work of my fellow peers:

OUTCOME:

Group Achievements:

  1. Proving different approaches and view points to the given topic

  2. exchanging helpful feedback

  3. team coordination

Group Struggles:

  1. Initially it was hard to reach to one solution

  2. Due to the open ended nature of the question there were too many ideas, leading to drifting from the original topic

LEARNING MANTRA

Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality; it is a way of understanding different possibilities.

Reflection:

This activity made my mind think in ways I never imagined to. While it was interesting to work in a world of fantasy it was equally hard yet exciting. The 'Just Dough It' project was very helpful with reference to this activity as I got a hand over dough because of it. My understanding of how different materials can be used to get my idea to reality was polished even more. Furthermore, I got to know a lot about the properties of egg; be it human or animal. It also took me back to the childhood days where fantasy land was a part of us which we lost touch with over the years. This was the first time we worked as a whole instead of divided into 2 sections therefore our interaction with new peers made us nervous but the activity even more exciting. I believe; to find fantasies in our own realities is a major part of our process in being a designer.
